So what's this website all about then? Its dedicated
to the Carry On films, stage shows, television productions, locations and loads of
other gubbins besides. But what are the Carry Ons? Well...
The
Carry On films were a long-running series of British low-budget comedy
films made at Pinewood Studios, England.
All of them were directed by Gerald Thomas and produced by Peter Rogers,
whilst the plots and dialogue, mostly written by Talbot Rothwell, showed
considerable music hall influences, seaside postcard vulgarity and
terrible puns.
The series began with Carry On Sergeant in 1958, which centred on a
group of recruits on National Service, and was sufficiently successful
that others followed. There was a core group of regulars including Sid
James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Hattie Jacques,
Bernard Bresslaw, Kenneth Connor, Terry Scott, Jim Dale, Barbara
Windsor, Peter Butterworth and Jack Douglas. Notable guest stars
included Frankie Howerd, Elke Sommer and
Phil Silvers.
The period in which the films were made coincided with the British
sexual revolution and the later films increasingly became more relaxed
towards sexual jokes and situations than the earlier ones. Many parodied
examples of more serious popular films such as Cleopatra, Hammer Horrors
and Tarzan
The series died out in the late seventies, as comedies such
as the 'Confessions Of' series of films (which combined Carry On humour
with soft porn), made the Carry On's look dated.
In 1992 an attempt was made to revive the series with Carry on Columbus.
Alas, it had a poor script and did not achieve any great commercial
success.
